One of the most important tips we give LinkedIn users is the importance of using a profile picture! We have seen people really miss out on this advantage.
Headshots are above and beyond the best. Taking a headshot allows people to look at you directly. It is the digital equivalent of looking someone in the eye. Using profile pictures greatly increases the odds of someone clicking on your profile!
Pictures help you connect more personally with people looking to network. We have seen people use stock photos (if you feel the need to do this – please at least buy the photo so it doesn’t have a watermark!), company avatars, or no photo at all. None of these help people get to know you. People dislike being deceived. If you post a photo on your profile, and then in person someone discovers you look nothing like your picture, this will probably create a bad impression.
When taking a profile picture, keep it as easy as possible! Look at your audience, have a simple background. You can communicate so much with just your eyes.
