OK, the title may only be half true, but it’s something you need to be aware of if your last job title was “Data Diva” or “Marketing Ninja”.

It’s really not that recruiters are lazy or even that search engines are dumb – it’s just unreasonable to expect either of them to think that far outside the box. You’re the one looking for a job (or client, or publicity, for that matter).

The best way to get found online is to make yourself findable.

    Thanks for sharing and expounding! It’s all-too-true! You need to fully optimize a LinkedIn profile if you expect to be found! Recruiters often take the path of least resistance.

  3. An excellent tip, but pretty disappointing that recruiters are lazy (you are right, of course). You would hope that at minimum they would do their research and look at potential titles. However if your title is obscure, yes you need to spend time to standardize it…
