Uber-blogger and corporate blogging consultant Liz Strauss of Successful-Blog and Liz Strauss.com has named Linked Intelligence as one of this week’s SOBs (Successful and Outstanding Bloggers).
Now, anyone can hand out an award, but I think what really resonated with me about this is Liz’s explanation of what this award is all about:

Vincent Wright posted on MLPF about what may be a LinkedIn first (first time I’ve ever seen it, that’s for sure): a publication actually quoting a LinkedIn recommendation.
In a recent interview with Ning CEO and Co-founder Gina Bianchini, Folksonomy.org opened the interview with:
Marc Andreessen commented on LinkedIn that he was impressed with your strategic thinking.
That “comment” is actually an endorsement on Gina’s LinkedIn profile by Netscape Co-founder and former AOL CTO Marc Andreessen.

Security researchers (some would say hackers – more on that below) have discovered a vulnerability in LinkedIn Internet Explorer Toolbar, which can be exploited to execute malicious code on a user’s system. Until such time as LinkedIn releases an update, users of the toolbar are advised to disable or uninstall it. This does not affect the vast majority of LinkedIn users, as the vulnerability only occurs if:
- You are using Internet Explorer, and
- The LinkedIn toolbar for IE is active, and
- You visit a malicious site with exploit code.
See the Secunia advisory for more details.
This case is bound to spark some ethical controversy, both in the security industry and regarding LinkedIn’s handling of the matter.

Here’s the question — is it ethical to add your LinkedIn connections to your newsletter list, or at the very least, a list of people you routinely contact? Where are the boundaries?
On the one hand, adding people to a “mailing list” without their express consent is spamming. On the other hand, LinkedIn is supposed to be a networking site. Isn’t one of the basic requirements of networking to communicate with the people in your network? Otherwise, aren’t they just a database entry? How are you supposed to keep in touch with even a few hundred people, much less a few thousand (and no, not only open linkers have that many connections).
It’s not a simple problem. Let’s explore it in more detail…
